A brief history of pancakes

The following writeup is taken from the book I bought, Unforgettable Women of the Century (published by People Weekly as a special collector's edition (1998). Citations using MLA or APA format are at the end of the short article.

"Oprah," writer Fran Lebowitz once summed up, "is probably the greatest media influence on the adult population." From her talk show base, she moves mountains of books, produces TV programming and films, and was herself nominted fora supporting-actress Oscar in 1985 for The Color Purple. Forbes has reckoned her net worth at $550 million, making Winfrey the world's wealthiest woman entertainer.

That she was born female, black, poor, and illegitimate in rural Mississippi in 1954 makes her rise even more remarkable. She credits her father, a Nashville barber who took custody of her after she ran away at 13. While on scholarship at Tennessee State University, she was hired as a local news anchor. Then in 1984, she turned around a faltering Chicago talk show by dumping food and beauty features in favor of hot-button topics like divorce. Buoyed by her humor, empathy and willineness to share her heroice personal struggles with ovesity and childhood sexual abuse, it was syndicated and soared to No. 1 in national ratings -- until she publicly swore off tawdry topics, declaring, "I won't have people yelling and screaming and trying to humiliate one another."

With her fiancé, marketing executive Stedman Graham, she uses her clout to help inner city families. Oprah's mission, she says, is for "people to have the grandest vision of their lives."
